This is my guide about everything you need to know when upgrading your Town Hall.
And in this guide when I refer to maxing out every building, also maxing out every wall is optional but highly preferable to have a decent levelled wall system in your base too.

What is the Town Hall?
The Town Hall looks like this as various upgrade levels.
The Town Hall only has one purpose in the game. To allow other buildings to be built. Better buildings and higher levels if existing buildings have a higher and higher Town Hall requirement before they can be built. This means if you want a better and better base you have to at some point upgrade your Town Hall to have more buildings/upgrades available to you. Since a better Town Hall equals better buildings available to you, it would seem that upgrading this building to the max level of 10 (at the time this article was written) would make the most sense, as you'd have every building and building upgrade available for you to build. In theory this is a great idea, but the developers of this game have added a few twists which make the choice of when to upgrade the Town Hall to the next level not straightforward at all. And below I will discuss the reasons for this.
Max Everything Out vs Upgrade Early
There is basically two schools of thought about upgrading the Town Hall in Clash of Clans.
1. The first is to upgrade everything available to you, to the maximum level allowed by your current level of Town Hall, then upgrade the Town Hall by one and repeat. Basically maxing out every building (and unit upgrade) as far as you can go before upgrading the Town Hall.
2. Not upgrading every building (and unit upgrade) to the maximum level possible before upgrading the Town Hall.
Most players opinion on this subject is, doing 1 is right and doing 2 is so wrong it's a sin. I would like to point out that this conventional thought is not true. Both options 1 and 2 are quite viable. I have done option 2 and many have done option 1. And both seem to work. There is one crucial factor though. You need to think long and hard about which option you wish to take. As neither are perfect. But both can be very fun. And this is where the meat of the article will lie. Not in forcing players to choose 1 or 2. But to give the players all the information they need to make the right decision 1 or 2.
The Loot Penalty
Before I explain both options in detail I need to talk about the loot penalty. This in short basically means when you raid other bases of a different Town Hall level to you you will not get 100% of the available loot when you attack the base. The percentages you will get of the available loot in the base you attack are as follows.
Enemy Town Hall 3 or more levels higher then yours - 200%
Enemy Town Hall 2 levels higher then yours - 150%
Enemy Town Hall 1 level higher then yours - 110%
Enemy Town Hall the same level as yours - 100%
Enemy Town Hall 1 level below then yours - 90%
Enemy Town Hall 2 levels below then yours - 50%
Enemy Town Hall 3 levels below then yours - 25%
Enemy Town Hall 4 or more levels below then yours 5%
Option 1 - Maxing Out Everything
As described above this option is all about upgrading everything you can at each Town Hall level before you upgrade the Town Hall one level. The repeat the process all over again.
Advantages of this:
- Players of an equal Town Hall level to you will have a hard time attacking your tough to beat base with lots of defences
- Will have higher levels of units to raid with (if you chose to upgrade those too).
- Raiding bases with higher Town Hall levels than you is easier. And thanks to the loot penalty it can be quite profitable. Town Hall level 7-8 seem to the be the best at this.
- Higher level Town Hall players will be more likely to leave you alone, because of the loot penalty.
- The game can be enjoyed slowly as you upgrade everything before the Town Hall is upgraded.
Disadvantages of this:
- Only higher levels of the Town Hall have every building available so you will be missing a few things at the lower Tow Hall levels.
- Some players don't like waiting to have access to every building and troop in the game.
- Trophy hunters will target lower level Town Hall players who follow this method of play. As they can easily beat them.
- Resource generators will be fewer in number and lower in level. Until the Town Hall is a higher level.
What to think about before choosing this method of play
This method of play is great for those who raid other bases a lot as the loot penalty will be in their favour. And higher level resource farmers will avoid them generally. If you want to start with a smaller stronger base and progressively upgrade the base with more and more buildings/troops, then this is the way for you to play. There is no special base design requirement for this style of play. As you will be getting lot from raiding much quicker then you lose it from being raided. The downside to this method is, because you are at a lower Town Hall, you have a lot less resource generators, and can't use that as a reliable source of income till you are at a decent Town Hall level (7-8+). This style of play suits the active raider and bloodthirsty Base leader who loves stealing resources from the enemy.
Option 2 - Not upgrading every building before the Town Hall is upgraded
This option of play is all about having the most different types and largest number of buildings available to you at the earliest possible time. A player can rush to Town Hall level 10 (the current maximum) or just choose to upgrade their Town Hall before every other building is maxed out. Not everyone wants to race to Town Hall level 10
Advantages of this:
- Can build almost every building (at building level 1) very early in the game (if rushed to Town Hall level 10), or a lot more buildings then option 1 above.
- Having a lot more buildings available is really fun. As having to wait for them can be really boring.
- A lot more base designs are available to the player
- Most or all (at Town Hall level 10) of the resource collectors are available to the player. And if all the purple elixir and gold generators are upgraded to the max, then the player has a serious income stream coming in.
- Has the defence in numbers strategy available. As in overwhelming the attacker with so many buildings, that the sheer number of them is hard to beat.
- Many trophy hunters will see this base as too hard of a target and leave you alone
Disadvantages of this:
- Even though the defence in numbers strategy works, each individual building will be weak for a while till they are all upgraded somewhat.
- Even though the trophy hunters will leave you alone (for the most part), the resource farmers will see you as a potential target thanks to the loot penalty not being in your favour if they are at a lower Town Hall to you. Thus resources losses thanks to enemy raids on your base can potentially be high.
- When you are attacking other bases the resource penalty hits you again. Does not make it impossible to farm for resources, but just a little harder to find viable bases to attack.
What to think about before choosing this method of play.
Firstly don't believe the masses when they say "this is baa-aa-ad". This method of play is very viable. I am speaking from personal experience here. But compared to option 1, this option needs a little thought and base planning to be successful. And I'll list the things you need to be aware of then choosing this option.
- No matter what Town Hall level you upgrade to, always build every building and wall available to you. (except the xbow and inferno tower, they are too pricey initially and can be done much later).
- Design a base with everything in mind. Use the defence in numbers strategy I mentioned above. It won't protect vs everything but it will help a lot.
- For all the defensive building upgrades, (they all cost gold) upgrade them evenly. And by that I don't mean all at level 2 then al at level 3. I mean all evenly cost wise. As in upgrade the cheapest thing next. Level 3 cannon costs less then level 2 wizard tower to upgrade, so you upgrade the level 3 cannon first.
- Try to upgrade the gold/purple elixir generators to the max. As they are a great source of income.
- Upgrade the resource storages as you see fit. But do not buy more then 2 gold and 2 purple elixir storages until you have upgraded everything in the game that costs less then 4 million. This will take a long time if you do not gem heavily. This is important as 2 of each storages are much easier to defend then 3-4 of each are. Town Hall Level 10 only costs 4 million gold so 2x gold storages will cover this just.
- If you love raiding a lot and using raiding loots for your building upgrades, then this method of play is probably not for you. This method of play is better suited towards the players who casually raid or don't raid at all and use their generators as their source of income. This can make upgrading in option 2 vs option 1 seem a little slower in option 2. This is true but some people (like myself) really like this style of play.
- Dark Elixir? For the most part don't worry about it, but if you have excess purple elixir floating around you can invest in the Dark elixir storage and generators. And then pump the dark elixir into the Barbarian King or Archer Queen. I personally do this only because I reached 10k dark elixir and was like "woah it's just sitting here and need to use it". With 3 generators of dark elixir (even at level 1) the dark elixir will mount up and better use before someone else raids you and steals it.
- If you do not raid much feel free to lower your trophies a little to try and have less people raiding your base. Don't go below 500 though or you'll feel the wrath of the sub 200 trophy farmers. When upgrading your base that is low level defences but high level Town Hall, you are not pushing for trophies. You are not in a state to do that till you upgrade all the defences. But you can hang around a lower trophy level (whatever suits you really). The point is don't feel bad about this.
In Conclusion
The Town Hall is an important building and when the player chooses to upgrade it defines the style in which they play Clash of Clans. Both of the two options/play styles mentioned above are 100% viable provided prior thought and planing is done. The most important thing when choosing which way to go in the game is fun. Without fun there is no point to play the game at all. And by reading this article I have equipped the player with the information they need to make an informed decision, and have a great fun time playing Clash of Clans.
